A LITTLE COURAGE & A LOT OF HARD NECK !
15th January 2011
Then we headed down to Camden Lock Market for a little browsing and, of course, a little photography !
This is where the story behind the following images begins. During my walk around I noticed a rather glaring graffitti image on Haven Street. I decided to photograph the graffitti for future use where I would insert a suitable subject. Just as I took the first picture a guy passed by holding a mirror – honestly he did ! I caught him just a little out of frame. (Pcture 1)
He looked back at me as he could hear the shutter fire so I ran after him and asked if he would mind walking passed again. (Pictures 2-5)

Somehow it didn't look right with the subject moving out of frame - so we tried again...
There was an old car painted in the Union Jack parked opposite the graffitti.
Immediately he figured out what I wanted and tried his best to hold the mirror in the correct position. I checked the images on camera and decided to ask him to pass by again. He positioned the mirror again and walked pass slowly allowing me to concentrate on getting the car reflected in the mirror. The sequence of shots have just been cropped roughly with no other enhancement. (Pictures 6-14)

My final choice was number 6 – although the subject is a little central the reflection of the old car is perfectly positioned. A little zoom on the image as a background helps to ignite the image. A little over the top ? - the whole image is a little over the top and I’m sure no one will believe me that it is a single capture – I can hear them shouting “Photoshopped” now.....

The end result was unexpected and not what I started to shoot. It just goes to show what a little hard neck will get you. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve been asked how I pluck up the courage to ask a person on the street to pose for a photograph. The truth is that each time you approach a person on the street it takes a little courage and a lot of hard neck.
I never asked my subject his name ....
