Carol-Anne Wilson - "Like a Boss"

10th August 2012

I spent the last week or so in Plano, Texas surrounded by a loving family carrying out Carol-Anne’s wishes to care for her in the home she and husband Robert set up after leaving Cork some 23 years ago.

Carol-Anne passed away on Tuesday afternoon (7th August) surrounded by those she loved, after loosing an epic ten-year battle against carcinoid cancer. She beat all the odds and during her struggle she helped many, many others deal with this cruel disease.
While we shed many tears of sadness at her passing they were also tears of joy at her presence and influence in our lives and those of so many others.

Her legacy is two-fold: firstly her family headed by her husband Robert and children David, Lorraine, Caroline, Andrew and Sandra and grandchildren Ian and Fallon. Secondly, her work with carcinoid cancer sufferers which included the setting up of the Carcinoid Cancer Texas Survivors support group (CCTS). Carol-Anne held the first meeting of this group in her house in 2002 when 28 people met to share their experiences. Carol-Anne worked tirelessly setting up a website, designing the logo and badge and beginning a path of educating herself beyond most peoples level of knowledge in order to advise and help others. Unlike most she understood in order for the group to grow she needed to empower others to take over – this she did and was able to experience before her untimely death.

You may by now appreciate why I chose the song by Lonley Island and the modern use of the title – like a boss. In life we are all given a choice in everything we do – do we do it normally or like a boss ? I now realize Carol-Anne’s choice …

Carol-Anne will be sadly missed by her sister and brothers – may she now Rest in Peace.
