SALON AWARD CEREMONIES
08th May 2011
So, what happens when you receive an award in an international salon?
Not every international salon issues invitations to award ceremonies but when they do what happens? I have been lucky enough to not only receive awards but also to accept the invitations to attend the awards ceremony.
My first was The 2007 Trierenberg Super Circuit in Austria. The Gala of Photography was a lavish affair – well worth attending. I travelled with Ann, Maureen & Gabriel. We were each interviewed at length during the awards (this was indeed unusual because most recipients were introduced, took a bow and left the stage). We had the privilege of having all our images displayed on the large screen while being interviewed on stage – an honour indeed. Afterwards we got to meet fellow photographers and enjoyed a lovely meal (and a few drinks)!

My second was to the awards ceremony in Italy for the 14th Gran Tour delle Colline 2010. I attended the awards ceremony and was singled out for special mention because I was the only foreign recipient to have travelled to Frigline, Valdarno in Italy. We celebrated at a local restaurant – a lovely meal and a fitting end. I won $500 and a UPI Medal. The next day I was joined by my wife Ann and Karen my daughter (along with a couple of her friends) – bang went the prize money!

My most recent was last weekend in Southampton for the 98th Southampton International Exhibition of Photography. I was the main awards recipient with a total of five awards – 2 FIAP Gold Medals, 1 Southampton Salon Medal and 2 Southampton Certificates of Merit – a national record! I was presented with my awards by Rosemary Wilman HonFRPS, President of The Royal Photographic Society. Again I met many fellow photographers and enjoyed another memorable evening.

I was torn between our own club’s end-of-year celebration and Southampton and decided much earlier on to travel to Southampton. I never expected to do as well as I did in our annual exhibition – I had five of my six entries in the awards and won the “Image of the Year” – again! Denis and myself are the only members to win this coveted prize three times. This year’s winning image “Barber to The Famous” was taken in Italy during my short visit to collect the prize in Frigline, Valdarno. So next time you receive an invitation to attend an awards ceremony think long and hard before casting it aside and don’t forget to bring your camera!
ps. I'm getting a little better at posing in front of the camera !
